United Star Ship Defiance

Eight years ago.

Alice entered the turbolift with an upright back and squared shoulders. "Bridge," she said to the computer, in a steady voice that held no trace of her inner nervousness.

Before the doors opened to the bridge, she ran a hand over her hair to smooth the already immaculate style, and checked the front of her uniform. It certainly wouldn't do to face the Captain with the dried remains of her breakfast adorning the front.

The turbolift doors opened and she exited onto the bridge and hesitated, unsure of her direction. She had only been on the bridge a few times during Defiance's three year journey, and the direction of the Captain's ready room was a bit of a mystery.

She looked around her; faces were bent over consoles. The Captain was not in sight; only the Commander lounged in the pair of command chairs at the center of the bridge.

She started in the direction she felt the ready room must be, and missed her footing on the low pair of steps leading from the turbolift. The abrupt clatter and followed by "Ow", made many faces look up from their stations.

Alice felt she could gladly sink down through the deck plating. Her face burned red, as she got up very quickly, struggling to keep her composure and her eyes to the fore as she marched in what she thought was the correct direction.

A soft touch on her elbow halted her, and she swung around to find the gentle eyes of Ensign Shinji Ikari.

"Allow me." Wordlessly he guided her in the opposite direction, leaving her with a smile at the door to the ready room. "It's okay," he whispered. "She doesn't bite."

Alice rang the chime and waited. The doors slid open and she saw Captain Indira 'Indy' Daimonji busy at the replicator.

Alice read about her Commanding Officer a few days before being transferred to the Defiance. The Captain was of Pakistani descent, born on a colony on the outer-rim known as Zebes. On her forehead, was an eye-arresting red Bindo and her nose was pierced, decored with a nose ring. Captain Indira Daimonji has undergone a decade of physical training and her figure shows it. She's fairly muscular and quite in shape. She is an ex-gymnast, the captain is physically agile and fast.

"Lieutenant Alice Brangwin. Welcome. The Doctor tells me you are quite recovered from the unexpected turn our away mission took."

"Yes, thank you, Captain." Alice stood in the stiff formal posture, hands clasped behind her back, legs slightly apart.

"Can I get you something from the replicator?" The Captain held a steaming mug in her hand, and the rich roasted scent of coffee permeated the air.

"Thank you, Captain. I'll have... a coffee."

Daimonji eyed her over the rim of the mug. "Brangwin, I asked what you would like, not what you think I would want you to have. Try again."

Alice flushed to the roots of her hair. "I'm sorry, Captain... I'll have..." Her mind went blank.

Daimonji watched her with a benevolent expression. "You know, the reason I asked you here today is because I want to help you to make some decisions about your future on this ship. Consider your drink order the first of these choices."

Alice covered her astonishment badly. "Mango Juice, if you please Ma'am."

"A wise choice." Daimonji punched buttons and presented her with the tall glass. She waved a hand at the couch. "Sit down, make yourself comfortable. I've asked the Commander to join us. He should be here any minute. Did he see you come in ?"

"The whole bridge saw me come in," said Alice miserably. "I tripped over the steps."

Alice sat, cradling her mug of juice and waited for the axe to fall. Since the away mission when she had performed so poorly, she had been on tenterhooks waiting for this summons.

Billy Telfer, Mortimer Harren and she had gone on what was supposed to be a simple away mission to investigate a gaseous nebula. Alice had realized early on that it was a flimsily disguised excuse to encourage three different crewmen, each with their own reasons for underachievement. The mission had turned bad, Billy had been injured and all of them had nearly died before being beamed unconscious into sickbay at the last moment. She didn't know what the Captain intended to do with her, but she wasn't looking forward to finding out.

The door of the ready room opened to admit Commander De Aan. He crossed to the replicator, ordered himself a cup of tea and took the seat in front of the viewport.

"How are you, Lt. Brangwin ?" He smiled his sincere smile, and Brangwin felt the unexpected warmth of his approval. She didn't know why he was supporting her, but it cheered her.

She smiled tentatively back. "Fine thank you, sir."

Daimonji steepled her fingers. "We all know why we're here," she said. "We need to find your true niche on this ship, Brangwin. I have some ideas, so has De Aan, but this is about you. "

She waved her coffee cup in emphasis. "You have to tell us what you want. There are no wrong answers here." Alice watched the coffee wash dangerously close to the rim.

The Captain took another gulp. "De Aan, why don't you begin?"

"I pulled up your Starfleet admission files, Lieutenant," he began. "And while I see you scored adequately in the science doctrines, it seems to me, and I think you will agree that science isn't really where you are happiest."

He flashed her the disarming grin again, and Brangwin felt the corners of her mouth tug up in response.

"You are an intelligent young woman," he said. "Empathic, sensitive to others. Your peer evaluations on this ship all come back very positive. People like having you around; they say you are a good listener, willing to help anyone and are unfailingly cheerful." He paused and Brangwin felt the blush creep out of her turtleneck and spread over her cheeks. Really, who would have thought she would be sitting here, listening to XO saying these nice things about her? She stole a glance at the Captain. She was watching the Commander, nodding her agreement.

"Luitenent ?" With a start she realized that the Captain had asked her a question and was waiting for her answer.

"Sorry, Captain." The flush of embarrassment was creeping up her neck again, but in bemusement she realized that the command team didn't seem annoyed, on the contrary, they were smiling benevolently at her.

"I asked you if working in Sick Bay appealed to you?" Daimonji repeated her question.

"I couldn't," Alice blurted out. "The doctor and nurses would be throwing me out the airlock after one shift."

“What about engineering?” De Aan then asked

Alice felt butterflies, no condors in her stomach, “I do not get along with engines, sir. If I am surrounded by the engine humming all around me for more than an hour, I’ll probably fall asleep on the job.”

Daimonji quirked her mouth and smiled at the Commander as if she was not in the room. "See, De Aan? I said she would need more convincing than that."

Alice moved her eyes unobtrusively from one to the other, her intuition picking up the vibes and unspoken warmth flowing between them.

"She's doing it again," De Aan nodded his head in her direction. "Reading more into people than they outwardly show her. An admirable trait."

De Aan noticed. "We have other ideas," he offered. "Hear them too. You don't have to decide on the spot."

"What else is there," Alice asked.

The room was suddenly heavy with a sweet tension Alice recognized, but didn't understand. The command team's eyes were locked together, in some silent communication she didn't share. Captain Indira Daimonji broke the silence by standing up and coming around the desk. "Think about it," she urged "Have you any suggestions yourself? After ten months on board, you have surely formed your own opinion of where you want to be."

"Not really, Captain." Alice was quiet in her indecision.

"You don't have to decide now," said Captain Daimonji.

It took Alice all of her strength to speak now, "Captain. I want to assigned to security. It is what I trained for."

De Aan smiled and added, "I told you Captain. She is a warrior."

Captain Daimonji smiled. "You can go, Luitenant. Think about what we've said. This is your career's future at stake, we want you to be happy."

Alice left the room, walking across the bridge, deep in thought. She stood outside the turbolift; eyes fixed on the doors.

"It comes faster if you summon it." Shinji Ikari's hand waved in front of her eyes as he pressed the button for her. "Penny for them."

"For what?" she asked, preplexed for a second. "Oh, my thoughts. Not worth it."

The lift arrived and she and Shinji entered. "I've finished my shift," he said by way of explanation. "I'm going to the mess hall. Care to join me for lunch?"

She hesitated, yet again, then emboldened by Captain Daimonji's demand that she say what she really wanted, she smiled at him. "Well, if you are sure. I'll try not to tip my tea in your lap."

"I'm sure," said Shinji Ikari. He looked so hopeful and puppy-boy appealing that Alice had to laugh.

~~~
The next day, Alice summoned all her courage and sat in the Ready Room. Her husband joined her for support. Daimonji and De Aan were surprised by Alice's next words.
"Ma'am, Sir, there's really not much difference between Command and Security. You just have a larger babysitting clientele. " Alice said. "I want to Command."
June 11, 2372. A few weeks before the Dominion War started
"What do you think of me ?" Alice asked Mouse in the darkness of their 'bedroom'
Their Maquis Raider was on auto pilot. Just an hour earlier, Mouse and Alice raided a Cardassian freighter carrying weapons to the De-Militarized Zone. De-Militarized Zone of course defined as an area with no offensive weapons of ANY kind. Just for defense against things like dangerous wildlife, the 24th century version of a snake gun.
"You really want to know what do I truely think of you ?" Mouse echoed. "Why do we work together so well ?"
"Yes." Alice confirmed.
"It is because you are perverse Alice Sharon Brangwin. You are the most perverse person I have ever known. Whatever one expects of you, as soon as you are aware of it, you do the opposite. You act the thug among diplomats. Among the liberal intelligentsia you are as conservative as the pope. Should you ever be called to meet the Federation President, you wouild appear nude and twirling a phaser rifle and dai-katana. It is a peculiar way of life, and disconcerting to all around you." Mouse answered.
"What a condemnation! Have I no good points ?"
"Several. Shall I count them ?"
Alice steeled herself.
Mouse continued, " 'To refuse to accept praise is to want to be priased twice over'. " Mouse chuckled, a rare noise. "La Rochegoucauld, maxim 149. Very good. One of the little annoyances of fighting a war for the peasants, farmers and the Maquis, is that one must associate with so many illiterate perople. Dying with you will at least be amusing. So that the first point. One can converse with you without boredom. This alone would make me your slave. Second, the esthetic appeal. A beauty, but maimed, scarred, like something out of Baudelaire. Irresistible. Third, your courage. Although unlike most heroes or anti-heroes you have full appreciation of the reality of death, still you behave as if you feel no fear. This is the most admirable for of courage. Finally, despite what we do- breaking and entering, stealing and defend ourselves with any means possible, including taking lives, you have not amputated your moral sensibility. Therefore you suffer agonies in your deepest soul, which is above all what makes you admirable, at least to me. Me on the other hand, are a connoisseur of suffering. It is my sport and basis of who I am."
The yellow and black grid vanished, as the first track loaded.
A desert. The tempature was well above 37 Celcius, no wind at all. A harsh unforgiving sun beating down. The Grand Canyon ...
A simple road was there, 4 lanes wide. In good condition.
Ten cars stood there. And one mini-helicopter with two seats.
Emkey announed the rules of the game. "Four races in total. Each track is 28 kilometers long. Vehicle damage is enabled, and if you "crash" or "die" you automatically DID NOT FINISH that one race. Only one wet shot of nitro is allowed, once you use it, you cannot use it again. The first race is a day time race, 440 bends between here and the finish line. This is not about raw top speed, but driving skills.
And the second race, held in day time, will be the Nordschleife, Germany. The old Northern Loop, the 1966 version of this track. This is still widely considered the toughest and most demanding purpose-built race track on Earth.
The third race will be held on Woodward Avenue, Detroit, it will be a night time race, complete with police cars chasing you. Followed by another night time race, Tsuchisaka, in the mountains of Japan and through heavy traffic of Tokyo."
Everyone nodded in agreement.
Doctor Karen Coleridge walked to her car, a 2006 BMW M5. Metallic dark blue paint job with silver racing stripes and a black interior.
Commander Liz Archer walked to her car, a Mercedes Benz CLK GTR. Painted silver, blue and red.
Alister walked to his 1970 Cuda, painted green with a black hood and black lines on the sides.
Sammy's car of choice is the 1969 Ford Mustang BOSS 302, with a gold and black paint job.
Captain Stryker walked to his car, a 2005 Toyota Celica, painted ruby red. Black interior.
Alice walked to her car, a Lancia Stratos, painted gold and black with a red interior.
Lt. Consy Coffee's car of choice is the BMW Nazca C2. Burgundy red, metalic forst green and metalic navy blue paint.
Petty Officer Wren chose a Nissan Sil 80, white and black checked flag painted on its sides.
Lt. Terry Byrne walked to his car, a Citroen Xsara RTR, painted blue.
Lt. Kyruzix hopped, skipped and jumped into his Dodge Viper. Default blue colour, green dual stripes and black panthers on the sides and the main hood of the vehicle.
Emkey wheeled over to his mini-helicopter, got into the pilots seat and took the controls of the open cockpit aircraft. Stanni got in behind him. The mini-helicopter's rotors started up, soon they were in the air.
Emkey turned on the signal lights. Everyone started their engines. Its is incredicbly LOUD!
The racers rev their engines to psyche their oppenents.
Emkey activated the lights.
Short stories 2
For my new Housemate, Diva, I will add more short stories that I have written.
*******
I was in band called "Wake up and Dream"
Tziki my friend founded the band.
She was intense, silent but visually hypnotic girl. She was a Betazoid. One of the few born without vocal cords.
I become lead vocals and female harmonies. Deanne Patterson, Raymond Briggs and M`Ress completed the band.
After two years of finding our niche, we hit it big.
I was about to turn nine when our band become famous for Tziki's thundering Marabi horns, punchy swing rhythms, and Ray's gumboots, pennywhistles and steel drums.
Tziki and I competed for top spot, being most famous.
My trademark was my unconventional fashion on stage. After becoming famous, our first two concerts were memorable for my fake dreadlocks and extremely long sleeves, as well as for silver-painted tears.
The five concerts after that, my basic look consisted of dyed hair often of several colours and a deepening tan. I had black and white eyeliner, false eyelashes, platform shoes, and brightly-coloured outfits. At the Mexico City concert, I added tie-dyed sarongs, a lot of bracelets, rings and necklaces to my outfit.
The last nine concerts, my headgear was topped by a very long feather, and my makeup went through several changes, including white lipstick to contract my darkening skin, pastel eye makeup, brightly-coloured contact lenses, and plastic dayglo-coloured clothing.
Tziki suddenly just left. She died a few weeks later on Betazed.
We were devastated and the band was no more. She was my closest friend. I miss her so much sometimes.
Our band released 33 songs. Two years in the spotlight .... It was fun.
Eleven Years ago
Mouse, Ray, Deanne, M`Ress, Alice, Wiuen and myself have been assigned to the USS Aurora. That was 120 days ago. I am infatuated with Alice, but will a relationship work?
I am so scared to try, we are close friends, I fear that a relationship will fail and make things very awkward toward us. We have known each other for four years now. We know of each others' pains and inner demons. I like the fact that Alice and I share quarters.
This starting my cadet cruise, a lot of things has happened. I embarrassed myself to the Captain on the very first day.
9 days later, the First Officer, Ciro Ramirez severely dressed me down for nearly falling asleep during my midnight shift. Since that day, Alice and I have the afternoon shift together on the Bridge.
So this is the crazy adventures of my life, on board an old rust bucket Excelsior class training ship. I honestly wish I was assigned to an Ambassador class ship instead, those are by far my favourite of the big ships.
I am in love, but she does not know it. I do not know if I am even ready for another relationship. I wish I could talk to my sister or my parents, but we are out of communications range.
Wiuen and Mouse's little war in still raging after all these years. Mouse does not like me to be around Alice, her best friend. She wants Alice to herself.
Ray respects me, but ultimately I think he prefers not to be around me. Deanne is finally not shy around me. Her brother is very clumsy and has a habit of talking unable to stop.
I have been spending the last nine days on the holodeck and doing reading on human relationships. Where is such a huge difference between the way Edenians and Humans is romance between partners. At the core we are the same, but Humans enjoy perfecting science and engineering experiments. But Edenians are more social creatures, we protect our own.
These are my thoughts, I have to stop thinking about this now, it is really late and I need sleep.
*************
Alice woke up about 0600 hours, Stryker was not in bed.
Alice checked the nursery, one baby sleeping, one missing ....
She then walked to the living room where Stryker was standing, burping Olivia. He had a mini towel on his shoulder, already in uniform. Then little Olivia barfed.
"'Why-me' sense tingling" Stryker whined. Alice smiled, "I am going back to bed"
Holodeck
Sammy pulled her blond hair from her face and tied it in a tight knot on the back of her head. She briefly then closed her eyes as she pulled the protective gear made of brown leather.
She looked in the direction of where Alice and Bélanna was standing. They had also chosen wear that suited their preferred aircraft. Her choice had been an easy one. For many years she had tried to find someone who had created a program that felt real. She had great expectations this time, her face erupted in a huge smile from ear to ear. She knelt and started to tie her uniform boots. How on earth could they wear boots of this kind?
This programmer was really good. Somehow she had been able to catch the scent of the damp asphalt after the smooth spring rain. She approached the craft and let her hand gently touch the side of the thin nose of the spitfire.
Sam looked in the direction of where Alice was standing. Her choice of period aircraft had been an easy one. Sammy's plane was the Mark 5 Spitfire, A-wing variant equipped with eight 7.6mm machine guns. Painted green camoflage colours. It had one Napier Lion and one Rolls-Royce "R" engine working together.
The Spitfire's elliptical wing had a thin cross-section, allowing a higher top speed than the Hawker Hurricane and other contemporary designs of the era; it also resulted in a distinctive appearance, enhancing its overall streamlined features. The fighter plane's name refering to a particularly fiery, ferocious type of person, usually a woman.
"You look really good but let me add the finishing touch" Alister grinned as he touched the chin of Sammy. She felt the engine grease and decided to return the favour.
"Love birds" Alice said smiling. Alice was wearing a brown and black leather flight coveralls. Her head was covered by red-brown and white coloured Winter Rabbit Fur Cap, Alice was doing up the chin strap. Alice noticed her clothing was making squeaking sounds every few seconds that sounded a lot like small farts.
The red haired woman climbed with her choosen plane. This aircraft was her second choice, Alice did not like the French built Sopwith Baby.
Alice's airplane was the Italian built, Macchi MC 72. A piston engine seaplane, powered by two V12 engines, one behind the other and two contra-rotating props. It was a single seater with two floats, painted red. Alice's plane had two 12.7mm machine guns.
They were standing on an airfield near Sammy's hometown. The temperature was a little on the cold side. A few clouds in the late-morning sky.
"Who will take off first ?" Sammy asked.
"My plane is faster, so, You have 15 minutes before I take off" Alice said, then added in dark tone "There can be only one"
~~
The Spitfire was flying South-East then South. From her left, Sam saw something unnatural. The Italian made her Spitfire dive almost 90 degrees straight down when she realized it was Alice's Macchi.
Sam felt the plane's characteristic "shudder", warning her that she was about to reach the limit of the aircraft's performance, while full control is retained at the wingtips and ailerons. "Dammit"
Alice pulled up at 2000 meters, considering the best way to hide from Sam, then how to position her Red Plane to attack Sam. I have to use my speed advantage, Alice thought.
The green Spitfire leveled at about 800 meters above the ocean, Sam searching for Alice.
After two minutes and still no sighting of Alice, Sam started climbing slowly. Suddenly from below, the red Macchi was firing at Sam. Missed me Sam laughed. The Spitfire turned quickly, her 8 guns nailing Alice's plane. About 100 rounds hit the wings and rear end of the Macchi but much for Sam's surprise, Alice's plane was still flying.
Alice retreated into cloud cover. Sam did not follow directly, instead making a slow left turn then suddenly a slow right turn. The thrill of the chase felt wonderful. Next time fly an open canopy plane Sam decided. She made her Spitfire climb at maximum thrust. Calculating where Alice would be hiding, Sam smiled, "Here Kitty, Kitty, Kitty !"
After five minutes of searching, nothing. Sam made a slow circle, her eyes scanning for Alice. Short range Sensors would be useful .... Sam thought to herself.
Still turning, there was suddenly bullet holes in her left wing. From behind, where the sun is hanging in the skies come Alice's plane. "Cowabunga !" Alice cheered, racing past the Spitfire.
Sam's plane was slowly losing speed and altitude. Alice realized Sam was no longer able to pursue her.
Sam was fighting the partial loss of control. She tried to estimate amount of damage to her craft and could only come to one conclusion as she heard the erratic sound of the engine. She went to full throttle and tried to get the plane to climb. She would need the extra altitude for the maneuver she had in mind. She checked her six and saw the red fighter approach for the kill. I hope she is overconfident like me. She thought to herself.
As the Spitfire went in to a steep climb the Macchi started to open fire as it approached. Suddenly the Spitfire's engine became quiet and the plane lost altitude and speed really fast. It was spinning downward in a spiral like way, similar to a falling leaf. The Macchi overshot the spitfire and started to turn in a wide angle. Suddenly the spitfire came to life again and Samantha attacked the Macchi with the sun in her six.
The Macchi started to roll to avoid the incoming fire but suddenly plexi glass was shattered all around Alice and oil started to leak out from the engine. The oil caught fire and the trail behind the Macchi engulfed the Spitfire and its engine froze. Both planes were going down in a hurry.
The metal plating of the turned off holodeck surrounded the combatants. The computers voice said "Dog fight program ended."
"I think I got you." Sammy said as she turned to Alice.
"No way. The program malfunctioned."
The women turned to Alister whom had been observing from ground during the simulation. "Don’t ask me. I couldn’t see." I’d better stay out of this. he thought to himself.
